What is Umbilical Stem Cells - Derived Biologic Options

Umbilical tissue–derived products are one of several regenerative tools used in orthopedic care. At Nevada Stem Cell RMC, these products are discussed selectively and used only when they make sense for a patient’s diagnosis, goals, and overall treatment plan.

This option is often appealing because it does not require a tissue harvest procedure and typically involves lower upfront cost compared to autologous (your own tissue)–based treatments. Like all regenerative options, it has specific strengths and limitations that should be understood before proceeding.

Where Umbilical Tissue Comes From

Umbilical Tissue vs. Adipose-Derived Options

Both umbilical tissue products and adipose-derived treatments are used in regenerative care, but they serve different roles.

Umbilical tissue products:
Adipose-derived treatments:
Neither option is inherently “better.” The right choice depends on diagnosis, severity of disease, prior treatments, and patient priorities.

Safety and Oversight

All injections at Nevada Stem Cell RMC are performed by a physician using image guidance when appropriate. This allows for accurate placement and reduces variability compared to landmark-based injections.

As with any injection-based procedure, risks exist. These may include temporary pain, swelling, stiffness, infection (rare), and lack of improvement. These risks, along with alternatives and expected timelines, are discussed during consultation so patients can make informed decisions.

What Umbilical Tissue Products Are (and Are Not)

Umbilical tissue products are best understood as donor-derived biologic materials, not a replacement for surgery and not a guaranteed solution for joint disease.

These products are used to introduce biologic signaling elements that may influence inflammation and tissue environment at the injection site. They are not the same as using your own stem cells, and they are not processed or expanded at our clinic.

Just as importantly, outcomes vary. Some patients experience symptom improvement, while others may see limited or no benefit. For that reason, careful patient selection and realistic expectations are essential.

When Umbilical Tissue May Be Considered

Umbilical tissue products may be discussed when:

They are not positioned as a cure-all and are not appropriate for every patient or every condition.

Physician-only care

Procedures performed by an MD/DO. No delegated injectors.

Precision matters

Fluoroscopy with IV contrast to confirm accurate positioning before injection.

Right tool for the right patient

We discuss options, pros/cons, and alternatives, not everyone is a candidate.
